Block

Block, Inc., formerly Square, Inc., is a US financial technology company co-founded in 2009 by Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey. It builds tools for sellers and individuals. Its two reportable segments are Square, which serves merchants, and Cash App, which serves consumers. It also owns Afterpay (buy now, pay later), TIDAL and the bitcoin-focused Proto and Bitkey products.

Square offers point-of-sale software and hardware, payment processing, online stores, invoicing, payroll, appointments and business banking, mainly in the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, Japan, Ireland, France and Spain. Square payment processing is not offered in India, so its relevance to Indian businesses lies mainly in comparisons and its open-source tools.

Square charges published per-transaction processing fees that differ by country, with optional paid software subscriptions such as Square for Retail and Square for Restaurants and hardware sold separately. Cash App earns revenue from instant transfers, the Cash App Card, bitcoin sales and Afterpay.

Block's 10-K says it has adopted a distributed work model and does not designate a headquarters. It lists an Oakland, California office at 1955 Broadway as its principal executive office. Jack Dorsey is Block Head and Chairman. The 10-K reported just over 10,200 full-time employees at the end of 2025, and in early 2026 the company announced cuts that would bring headcount below 6,000. Block trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker XYZ, having changed from SQ in 2025. The company was renamed from Square to Block in December 2021 to reflect its broader range of businesses beyond merchant payments. Cash App reported 59 million monthly transacting users in the US at the end of 2025.
