What e-prescription software does

Electronic prescribing software gives the doctor a structured screen for complaints, findings, diagnosis, medicines, investigations and advice. Teleconsultation, ABDM and pharmacy links

For online consultations, the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines published by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare restrict which categories of medicine may be prescribed remotely and exclude narcotic and psychotropic drugs, so the software should flag these. Under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, prescriptions can be shared as health records to a patient's ABHA-linked account with consent, if the vendor supports it. Some tools can also send the prescription to a partner or in-house pharmacy for dispensing. Scheduled drugs are also regulated under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, so check with your pharmacist how digital prescriptions are accepted for them.

Getting started

Set up your letterhead, registration details and signature first. Build templates for your top 20 diagnoses and common medicine combinations, since this is where the speed comes from. Use the software for follow-up patients during the first week while you are still learning, then move all OPD patients over. If you have an assistant, let them enter vitals and history before the patient reaches you, so you only add diagnosis and medicines.
