Kaleyra

Kaleyra is a communications platform as a service (CPaaS) company. It provides APIs and tools that let businesses send SMS, WhatsApp, RCS, voice, video, email and chatbot messages to their customers. It began in 1999 as Ubiquity, a small startup in Milan, Italy, founded by Dario Calogero. Its 2022 annual report (Form 10-K) calls Kaleyra headquartered in Milan, and lists its principal executive office in New York City. Kaleyra is not headquartered in India.

India is still an important market for Kaleyra. In 2017 it bought Solutions Infini, a Bangalore-based bulk messaging company, which now operates as the subsidiary Solutions Infini Technologies (India) Private Limited. Kaleyra's Indian customers include banks, e-commerce companies, logistics firms and healthcare providers. They mostly use it for one-time passwords, transaction alerts, WhatsApp Business messaging, number masking and contact-centre voice. Pricing is usage-based, charged per message or per minute, and larger customers negotiate contracts.

Kaleyra Inc. was formed in November 2019 when Kaleyra S.p.A. merged with GigCapital, a US special-purpose acquisition company, and listed on the NYSE under the ticker KLR. Tata Communications, the Mumbai-based telecom company, agreed to buy Kaleyra in June 2023. The deal closed on 5 October 2023 at USD 7.25 per share, about USD 100 million in cash, with Tata also taking on Kaleyra's debt. Kaleyra then left the NYSE, and its products are now sold as Tata Communications Kaleyra.

Before the acquisition, Kaleyra reported FY2022 revenue of USD 339.2 million. It had 675 employees at 31 December 2022 and more than 1,600 operator connections in over 190 countries.
